Dr. John Holland, Artistic Director
John Holland, B.Mus, Art.Dip, M.Mus, PhD, joined Chorus York at the beginning of September, 2024 as our  Music Director. He brings with him over twenty years experience as a professional opera singer, choral conductor, and music educator, and a tremendous knowledge of music, specifically choral repertoire.  He feels Chorus York holds an important role in the local community as an artistic entity, but also as a caretaker of musical heritage and traditions, and he looks forward to helping it build a strong foundation in the traditional classical choral repertoire, as this is the best way to promote learning, musical growth, and a high level of performance in keeping with its mission and vision.

Throughout John’s career as a professional musician, conductor, and educator, foremost his inspired leadership and passion for music has engaged and inspired similar passion in those around him, on stage, in the classroom, and from an administrative standpoint. His contributions to organizations such as Orpheus Choir, Toronto Oratorio Society, and the Canadian Institute for Czech Music have inspired board members and volunteers alike to take on new projects and excel at their delegated roles. His fundamental passion for educating and cultivating singers, together with his extensive knowledge of repertoire spanning several centuries and styles, including vast knowledge of choral music, has allowed him to create both individualized and ensemble curricula that promotes vocal development and artistic growth for voices.

He says he has spent a lifetime in choirs, that they were essential to making him the musician and leader he is, and that he is thrilled to be joining Chorus York’s path through the future.
